It is widespread and actually normal and comprehensible – test anxiety. There is usually a lot to do with an exam – in the first few semesters, you need to have certain certificates to take a proseminar, and the intermediate exam is a prerequisite for attending a major seminar.
The longer exams take place at the very end, and most students are also the most frightened of them because everyone expects them to be.
Fear is a – sometimes more or less – legitimate emotion before and during certain events. Test anxiety is expressed in nervousness, palpitations, sweaty hands, tremors and poor concentration.
Failure fears are widespread among students – such as the fear of blackout during an exam. Other students, on the other hand, have difficulties with learning and do not understand some of the relationships correctly – even outside of an exam situation.
Preparation is half the battle
Anyone who has prepared well for an exam is less likely to be afraid of the exam in most cases. Try not to cram into short-term memory, but to understand all connections correctly. Enjoy learning specific visual aids while learning.
This minimizes the risk of blackout during the exam. If you have technical questions that should be clarified before an exam, please put these to your instructor. Most lecturers offer questions before the exams.
Learning must be structured!
Before exam phases, set up a learning plan in which you write down how many days you are planning for which exams! Important: Make this plan as early as possible and at the same time get an overview of the study material, so that you can correct the plan again if necessary and allow more time for one or the other subject.
Training – Get exams or exams from previous semesters

Another important component of the oral exam is the examiner himself
Maybe you have the opportunity to choose an examiner. But with the assessors who are in the oral final exams, the possibility is usually not or you also has no influence on who the assessor will be.
In that case, focus on the person you know best and answer the questions of the person who asked the question. Remember: Even examiners are only human! If an examiner is in a bad mood, it has nothing to do with you!

Ask yourself what can happen in the worst case if you do not pass the exam. Can you repeat the exam?
Most students will have to repeat one or the other exams from subject to subject to varying degrees during their studies. It is not a big embarrassment to fail an exam. In your later life, hardly anyone will ask if you passed all the exams in your studies straight away.
In case of illness or sleepless night
If you feel really bad on the day of the exam – be it due to illness or sleepless night – take the exam at a later time. Rattling through an exam due to illness would be a lot of nonsense, since – if you do not actually pass the exam the second time – you may even be willing to repeat.
Gentle remedies for test anxiety
If the best preparation is not enough antiseptic, you can use gentle medicine: St. John’s wort and valerian are well established. In addition, Bach flower emergency sweets or drops enjoy great popularity as a means against test anxiety.
You can also try various relaxation techniques such as autogenic training, progressive muscle relaxation or breathing exercises.
In chronic cases of test anxiety, hypnosis can also be helpful. Not everyone believes in it, but some people swear by it: homeopathy. Important: For this to work, you must refrain from mint, menthol, peppermint, eucalyptus, camphor, and chamomile. Most chewing gum is therefore taboo in homeopathy.
Which means against stage fright are big mistakes
Some people swear to drink alcohol the night before an exam. If you follow this advice, limit yourself to a very small amount. Because large amounts of alcohol harm the brain and thus your exam performance the next day.
Even if an exam is due, it means (as always): Stay away from drugs!
When gentle remedies do not help against the test anxiety
If the above tips do not help you with the anxiety test, you can consult a psychologist, psychotherapist or psychiatrist for advice. The test anxiety has its own place in the ICD-10, ie in the official directory of diseases and can – if they are too bad – be treated for medical treatment. You do not have to be ashamed to seek professional help.
